“I speed up for Democrats.”

Tuesday, July 29th, 2008

That’s one of the things my dad said in 2004, when we were watching the Democratic National Convention. Just a joke. Ha, ha.

Another conversation comes to mind: we were discussing the comparative intelligence of Dubya and Bill Clinton. “Clinton, at least, is intelligent,” I said.

“No! The man’s an idiot!”

“Oh, come on. You may disagree with his politics, but he at least has a brain in his head. He is capable of something resembling rational thought.”

“No! He’s not!”

I don’t think the left vs right divide is even about politics a lot of the time. This is like Cubs vs Sox. Right-wingers vote Republican because the Repubs are “their team”. They don’t even care whether the Repubs are right about anything or whether they’re going to screw things up. They don’t care because they don’t even think about that enough to acknowledge the possibility. The Repubs will do it right because the Repubs are “their team” and the Democrats are not. That means they’re wrong. And stupid. Period.

And as if that wasn’t bad enough, this shit is even worse than idiotic. It gets violent.

Woo-hoo! Nothin’ rednecks like better than Librul Huntin’ Season, amirite?!

Ugh. Wake me up when President Obama takes office.

  1. Perhaps you should send your dad Mark Morford’s recent column. Though the people who should read it probably won’t.

  2. Crabby, thanks for the pointer to Mark’s column! May enough read it to ensure the defeat of Prop 8…

You might enjoy this, which is a summary of a paper by Dean Simonton of UC Davis on estimates of the IQ of the presidents: http://www-cse.ucsd.edu/users/gary/iq.html. JQ Adams tops the list, and Clinton is #5 (behind JQ, Jefferson, Madison, and Kennedy). He also devises an “Intellectual Brilliance” Clinton is at fifth (behind Jefferson, Kennedy, Wilson, and JQ Adams).

FWIW, according to this article our current prez is, compared to the general population, quite intelligent but still at the bottom of the presidents. In Intellectual Brilliance, 10 were the same or worse (Harding, Coolridge, Grant, Monroe, A Johnson, Taylor, Buchanan, Fillmore, B. Harrison, and Eisenhower).

  3. There was some comment George Carlin made once… something about how the average person is really quite dumb, and by definition the fact that they’re average means that half the population is even more stupid :(

(Yes, I know, Carlin probably put it a lot better than I just did.)

  4. Interesting article! While I’m not shocked that Bush is dumb for a president, I am surprised that he’s smart for an average person. Makes me realize he must be putting on a bit of an act to seem stupider and thus easier for the average person to relate to.

Why on earth Americans these days want their leaders to be no smarter than they are is a mystery to me, but it does seem to be the case. One of the main criticisms of democratic candidates seem to be that they’re too smart and therefore “elitist.” Sigh.

  5. Crap, I forgot to check commentluv!

I luv that feature and wish blogger had it.
