Obama is the new white

The claim: Hillary voters are excluded from the “privileged” group of white people. They are perceived as “less-than”, “off-white”.

The evidence: Obama is #8 on the list of Stuff White People Like, but Hillary didn’t make the list at all.

The reaction: Are you fucking kidding me?! Meghan Daum’s probably also one of those people who thinks Harry Potter fans worship Satan, and that Obama’s a Muslim ’cause she done heard it on the teevee. What an idiot.

The whole discussion is so weird I couldn’t even follow it. The white thing doesn’t even work as a joke when you try to lump everyone together. You have to at least pick out certain demographics to make fun of them and their choices effectively. “Liberal elitist democrats,” “rednecks” whatever. I can laugh at dumb stereotypes and feel guilty about it, but this whole white thing doesn’t even work as humor, as on the “what white people like” site, let alone as fodder for some serious point she seems to be trying to make about disenfranchisement.

I guess the upside here is that if white people do dig Obama enough, it shows the racial divide is diminishing, and this country might actually get a good president… although almost anything would look good after the last eight years.
