Jon Stewart: “WTB Elitist President!”

Tuesday, April 15th, 2008

Last night, Jon Stewart discussed Obama’s “bitter” gaffe and Hillary’s attempts to woo the redneck voters, and pointed out something that should be obvious: Shouldn’t we want our President to be better than us?!

Epic lulz are at the end of the video, 7 1/2 minutes in.

  1. I so totally agree! I actually said the same thing to the poor lobster, who has to listen to my rants, when I heard the “elitist” charge. How did “elitist” get to be such an insult? (But Jon was way funnier).

I’m really tired of the adolescent American notion that intelligence and sophistication is something to be feared and resented, and that politicians should at all costs pretend not to be any smarter or more knowledgeable than fifth graders. Arrrggh. I think Hilary’s smart and capable too, and should be above jumping on the bandwagon on this one. I would have had a lot more respect for her if she had defended him, because what he said was totally true.

  2. Crabby McSlacker: You mentioned fifth graders and I had a thought — we should make it a requirement for high office that candidates be able to correctly answer all ten questions in an “Are You Smarter Than A Fifth Grader?” quiz. Or even better, “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?” (and if they miss one of the first five questions, they have to go back to fifth grade and are never allowed to run for anything again…)

  3. Bush would never even have been allowed to be governor if he’d first had to answer game-show questions. Imagine that dolt on Jeopardy… And this (former) notion of wanting a president you can have a beer with? Do those people who thought that way… still think that way? Just more anti-intellectualism run amok. And witness where that got us…
