The bad news and the good news
Thursday, January 24th, 2008The bad news is that I failed the road test for the second time. For those of you who are now wondering, yes, I am 24 years old. I’m now working on my eighth year as a freak with no driver’s license.
The good news is that I fixed MythTV. So now I can watch commercial-free TV all I want while I’m sitting at home with no driver’s license.
The other good news is that I move in two days.

Good to hear I’m not the only freak in the world. Everyone keeps telling me, “oh, come on — any idiot can drive” and reminding me that it’s not possible to be a functional adult without being good at driving. That all makes me feel so much better.

January 25th, 2008 at 4:28 pmThe USA’s obsession with automobiles and its tendency not to have anything resembling a good public transport system make me glad that I no longer live there. I know plenty of British people much older than you who don’t know how to drive, and the trend seems even more common in Spain. (I disagree with Crabby McSlacker’s characterisation of his strong preference not to drive as a phobia. Do most Americans have a phobia about being on buses and trains?)
There are many, many people on the road in Chicago who really ought not have driving licences. The world would be a safer place if more people were like you.

January 25th, 2008 at 4:31 pmYou forgot to mention the additional piece of good news: Unlike many of the people who consider themselves responsible adults because they regularly engage in irresponsible use of heavy machinery, you’ve acted like a responsible citizen and bothered to vote.

January 26th, 2008 at 5:56 pmIt took me a while to pass my road test, too. First time was at 16 or 17 and I failed miserably. I gave the whole thing up until I got a job and HAD to get a license or take the stinky old bus at night. Second time I was 19 or 20 and I just squeaked by, almost failed again. They try to trick you into doing things that are illegal on the road, which seems kind of stupid to me. I was a sweet trusting kid so I had no idea.
You’ll get it eventually if you keep trying.
OTOH, in the not-too-distant future I believe the average person will not be able to afford to drive anyhow since we’ll have used up the oil.

Sorry to hear about the DMV drama.
Karen hates to drive, but we live in Houston, where mass transit is virtually nonexistent. She swears one day to move to New York City, or somewhere in which driving is totally unnecessary.

Sorry to hear about the road test.
I am a freak who’s had driver’s license for over 30 years but HATES to drive. A weird little phobia. Fortunately, we live where I don’t have to do much driving and walking a lot is good for me.
