I maded you a present, but it was sacrilegious

Sunday, August 26th, 2007

Ah, I think I can hear the hysterical shrieking from here: “YOU INSULTED ISLAM! YOU INSULTED ISLAM! WHITE DEVILS! WHITE DEVILS!!” What did we do? What did we do?

A demonstration has been held in south- east Afghanistan accusing US troops of insulting Islam after they distributed footballs bearing the name of Allah.

The balls showed the Saudi Arabian flag which features the Koranic declaration of faith.

The US military said the idea had been to give something for Afghan children to enjoy and they did not realise it would cause offence.

[...]

Afghan MP Mirwais Yasini said: “To have a verse of the Koran on something you kick with your foot would be an insult in any Muslim country around the world.”

Say, Muslims, here’s a little something you might want to think about: Most Americans can’t read Arabic. They may have had no idea what the text on the Saudi flag said and why it would be a bad idea to put it on a football. Mightn’t it have been, perhaps, more rational to send the balls back and say, “Sorry, we can’t accept these, we appreciate the gesture, but we consider it sacrilegious to print scripture on a football”?

Oh, that’s right, I forgot. Islam is a peaceful religion, and that means you need to start screaming and throwing things every time you get the tiniest bit offended about anything.

God’s a big boy, right? Have you ever considered that, if he’s offended, he doesn’t need us humans to throw temper tantrums on his behalf? Just a thought.

  1. This stuff is so depressing. We have morons on both sides of this–it’s stupid to overreact to a gift, but also typically ignorant of the US to not have any clue what might cause offense. Why is no one with any cultural awareness advising them?

  2. Crabby, strangely enough:

A spokeswoman for the US forces in Afghanistan said they made “significant efforts to work with local leaders, mullahs and elders to respect their culture” and distributing the footballs was an effort to give a gift the Afghan children would enjoy.

Why in the world did none of these people clue them in, if it was such a huge insult? I can almost see them getting together and saying, “Hey, let’s let them put the Saudi flag complete with the declaration of faith on a football and see what happens! Tee hee!”

Either that or they’ve been partaking of too much of that Afghan opium. Or both.
